Early in the mornings, when children are still sleeping, Or late, late at night-time, beneath the summer moon, What are they doing, the busy fairy people? Could you creep to spy on them, in silent magic shoon, You might learn a secret, among the garden borders, Something never guessed at, that know one knows or thinks: Snip, snip, snip, go busy fairy scissors, Pinking out the edges of the pedals of the Pinks! Pink Pinks, white Pinks, double Pinks, and single, Look at them and see if it's not the truth I tell! Why call them Pinks if they weren't pinked out by someone? And what but fairy scissors could pink them out so well?
	Pink also called clove pink (Dianthus) Pinks have four rounded petals with a distinctive eye, on a grey-green stem. Double pinks are also available which have full frilled flowers like a tiny carnation. The leaves are narrow and firm. Pinks have a spicy sweet scent. They grow in many colors...Pink obviously! also white, cream, deep red, peach. Petals are often a different color around the edges, or spotted in the center. The color pink is actually named after this flower. The flower pink is named for the ragged edges on each petal; dressmakers will be familiar with pinking shears, scissors which produce a zigzag cut similar to the petal edges. Pinks have a very old history and can often be seen in the background of medieval tapestries and renaissance paintings.
