Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker - Elf Flower Fairy

The Little Elf

I met a little Elfman once,
Down where the lilies blow.
I asked him why he was so small,
And why he didn't grow.

He slightly frowned, and with his eye
He looked me through and through -
" I'm just as big for me," said he,
" As you are big for you!"

Elf Lore
Elves can sew and spin very well, and can even spin gold from grain if needed.  The faery tale of Rumpelstiltskin tells the story of a self-serving Elf who spins gold from straw in order to obtain a human child.  They can also spin cloth and make shoes and are known for aiding deserving humans in need.  They have few enemies, the most noted being cats.  Mice are their familiars as well as their household pets, and occasionally Elves appear in ursery rhymes and fairy tales disguised as mice.  You can find elves in fields, homes, woodlands, and all over Faeryland.
