Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker - Elder Fairy

When the days have grown in length,
When the sun has greater power,
Shining in his noonday strength;
When the Elder Tree's in flower;
When each shady kind of place
By the stream and up the lane,
Shows it's mass of creamy lace
Summer's really come again!

There are about 25 different species of perennials, deciduous shrubs and soft wooded trees in this genus. Most are rarely cultivated because of their tendency to become weedy and invasive. Some species are useful for their edible flowers and berries and are attractive in flower.

Usually undemanding, Elders thrive in any reasonably well-drained, fertile soil in sun or shade. Prune out old shoots and cut young shoots by half. Propagate from seed in autumn or cuttings in summer or winter.
